Uniform embroidery

School uniform requirements will change from September 2016 with the introduction of our new school uniform, establishing a new identity for children as they learn with us as Hook Junior School grows and continues to offer a high standard of education.

In December 2015, we wrote to advise you of several changes taking place in school. The first of these was the construction of a new school building that will enable us to accommodate a greater number of pupils and offer an enhanced learning experience. We also explained that our school identity was changing and that a new school logo will be introduced for the academic year beginning 2016. Finally, in order to reflect this new identity, we also explained that our school uniform is changing.

We asked all parents to comment on the quality and suitability of the school uniform provided by Marks and Spencer in September 2015. Marks and Spencer have been our school uniform supplier for the past three years. Your overwhelming response was that the uniform supplied by Marks and Spencer was very much an appropriate choice for appearance, quality, durability and value for money. We are therefore continuing to offer our school uniform through Marks and Spencer for the foreseeable future.

How is the uniform changing?

Available for purchase from June 2016, our new uniform will reflect the key aims of our new identity; it will characterise the high standards of education we aim to deliver and the excellence we aim to achieve in educating children from Hook and the surrounding community. The uniform remains smart and also practical; by wearing it, children show that they are part of the school, take pride in representing the school and the uniform provides children with a collective identity.

A number of items in the school uniform will carry the new Hook Junior School logo that we introduced to you in our communication in December 2015 and has been on display in the school entrance durinng the spring and summer terms.

Each element of the new school uniform for boys and girls is sumarised for you in our parents pages, where each item of class uniform, sportswear and accessories is listed.

House names and colours are also changing. Emma B of the School Council explains:

As we are having a new extension, logo and uniform, it was decided to see if the house team names should also be changed, since they have remained the same for as long as any of us can remember. Demonstrating democracy, which is one of our British values, School Council surveyed each class to see which possible names were most popular.

Once the findings were collected, it was seen that there were two clear favourites which were the names of birds and famous people who had strong links to Hampshire. Because these choices were so close, we wanted everybody to have their say on the final choice. Therefore, it was decided that there should be a vote between the two winning options. During an assembly, the two favourite choices had their values and qualities explained. Voting slips were handed out to every member of the School Council, who then distributed them to their own class and ensured that the vote was conducted fairly. These were then secretly placed inside the voting box, which a member of School Council then took down to Mrs Martin’s office.

After this, the votes were counted and the results were announced in the celebration assembly, with the winning option being the famous people who had links to Hampshire. House team names will change as follows; Eagles will change to Nightingale; Falcons will change to Brunel; Kestrels will change to Austin; Owls will chnange to Wellington.

Uniform Examples

Alfie

Alfie will be 7 in October and is starting year 3 after the summer break. Alfie's uniform will comprise the following items:

  • 1 x jumper for everyday use, £12.00
  • 1 x polo shirt for PE, £6.00
  • 1 x school tie in his house colour, £6.00

Alfie is using his own school bag and PE kit bag and he will wear grey trousers and white shirts, purchased from a high street retailer.

Jenny

Jenny has previously been attending another school and is joining year 5 in September. Jenny will be 9 when she starts year 5 and her uniform comprises:

  • 1 x cardigan for everyday use, £13.00
  • 1 x polo shirt for PE, £6.00
  • 1 x school tie in her house colour, £6.00

Jenny will be using her own school bag, and since she doesn't already have a kit bag, her parents will purchase one along with her other uniform items for £8.00. Jenny will be wearing pinafore dresses and blouses from a high street retailer.

Jason

Jason is 10 and moving up to year 6 this year. He already has a school jumper that is in good condition and fits well - his PE kit is also in good condition. As the school year from September 2016 to July 2017 is a transition year, Jason's parents won't buy any new items unless his existing uniform no longer fits, or is damaged or heavily worn.
